God’s Compass

Change is inevitable. For most people, they either thrive on it or, if they’re like me, they aren’t a fan. Personally, I think it’s because I always like to feel in control…OK, FINE! I’m a control freak. I don’t mean to be, it’s just one of my many quirks. Nevertheless, change happens. Our journey is not up to us, but to Almighty God, who created us.

For the past few years, I have had the privilege to work alongside the Next Gen Pastor at Legacy Christian Church, Tyler Johnson. He has done a phenomenal job working with the children and teens. To put it simply, he just “gets” them.

In my opinion, he has especially had a positive impact on the teens, not only in our church, but in our local community. This is where I have been blessed to work with him. Tyler has this endless energy that, truth be told, I’m a bit envious of. He is one of the most “present” people that I have ever met. If there’s a need, he’s there to meet it. From serious needs like prayer and advice, to fun activities like games and sports, Tyler’s there for these teens. He meets them where they are, no questions asked. He’s frequently spotted at church, surrounded by teens!

He’s also their for parents and for other youth leaders like me. I can’t remember specifically what he said that Sunday morning when he was asking for people to help out on Wednesday nights with the teens, but God urged me to answer the call. Very hesitantly, I did. At first contact, Tyler was very forthcoming with me, and he expressed that he only wanted people who would stick around. After all, children need consistency. After a few back and forth emails, we both decided that I would come to check out a Wednesday night. Personally, I was terrified, but I stuck with it. One of the qualities that makes Tyler such an incredible leader is his natural ability to nurture other leaders. Through all my doubts and fears, which still continue today, Tyler has encouraged me every step of the way. He always seems to know just the perfect thing to say or do to make someone feel better and boost their confidence. He’s a few decades younger than me, but I cherish his wisdom and his endless support.

As I mentioned at the beginning, change is inevitable. As oftentimes happens, God has called Tyler and his beautiful wife, Allie, to the next chapter of their ministry. Tyler will soon be ministering to teens in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He will be greatly missed at Legacy, but he has built a firm foundation for the growth of the Next Gen kids and students ministry.

Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way, they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. 1 Timothy 6:18-19 (NIV)

In the interim, my beautiful friend, Shelby, will be taking the reins in the Next Gen Ministry at Legacy. Shelby grew up in the church, and has worked with Tyler for the last 8 years as both a student and a leader. Personally, I can’t think of a more ideal person to take over this ministry during this interim period. She loves kids, and you can truly see the Holy Spirit at work in her life. I’m excited and humbled for the opportunity to work with her.

Command and teach these things. Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. 1 Timothy 4:11-12 (NIV)

To Tyler, Allie, and August: I’m so excited for this next chapter in your journey! Although I will miss you, I know that God is in control, and when He leads you to it, He will bring you through it. It’s been evident in the process that you have all been blessed beyond measure. May God grant you protection, good health, and peace. I love you guys!

To Shelby: I’m equally excited for this next chapter in your spiritual journey! I’m humbled and honored to be able to continue the legacy left by Tyler and Allie with you. I see God at work in your life, and I will be here to support you in any way that I can. May God grant you protection, courage, encouragement, and hope. I love you!

Although we don’t exactly know for sure who will be taking the permanent Next Gen Pastor position at Legacy, I’m excited for the future of this ministry. Tyler has left a solid foundation to be built upon. Shelby has the experience and energy to make the transition a smooth one for everyone. Personally, I’m pulling for her to get the job permanently, but God is in charge. It’s His Compass. Only He knows the future, and His Ways are always best.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for Tyler, Allie, Shelby and all of our leadership team and students. Thank you for the person reading this. Please continue to give us your mercy, grace, love, and forgiveness. Give us discernment and courage for the journey ahead. In the Name of Your Precious Son Jesus, Amen.
