The Mirror

(Unless specified, the all Bible verses are from the NIV version)

Be honest…do you like your reflection in the mirror? For me, the answer is sometimes yes and sometimes no. It depends a lot on my mindset for the day. It depends on what my brain is saying at that particular time.

Mirrors are powerful tools when you really think about it. We get a glimpse at how others see us, on the outside at that is. If you’re like me, you probably like what you see at times, and at other times you don’t. Sometimes I think the Amish community is onto something by not having mirrors. It’s not the outward appearance that matters, but how God sees our hearts. One of my favorite Bible verses states:

“But the Lord said to Samuel, Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7 (NIV)

I specially love how the Message Translation says it: “But God told Samuel, Looks aren’t everything. Don’t be impressed with his looks and stature. I’ve already eliminated him. God judges persons differently than humans do. Men and women look at the face; God looks into the heart.

What if mirrors only reflected what is on our hearts? Would we like what we see? Would we go easier on ourselves and others?

While mirrors will never be able to show us our hearts, God shows us through His Word, the Bible. It is imperative to know His Truths because His Word also warns us many times about the lies and tricks of the enemy. Satan and his minions work overtime at telling us untruths about ourselves and others.

“And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.” 2 Corinthians 11:14

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8

“When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown on their heart. This is the seed sown along the path” Matthew 13:19

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10

“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil the the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6:11-12

There are countless other warnings about the tactics of the enemy. It’s important to emphasize that the enemy may be disguised as someone you trust, a friend, an authority figure, a celebrity, or even a member of the clergy. He is the master of deception, which is why it’s imperative that we look only to God’s truths about ourselves and others. Who does God say that we are?

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10

“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” 1 John 4:4

God’s Word is filled with Truths to combat the enemy’s lies. Whenever doubt creeps in, take a look at yourself through God’s Mirror.

My prayer for you today is that you are able to ignore the lies of the enemy and see yourself as God sees you. Heavenly Father, I humbly lift up the beautiful soul reading this. Help them to see themselves and others as you created them to be, in Your Image. Give them clarity and discernment to recognize the lies of the enemy so that all they see when they look in the mirror is Your Image. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
